It is best described as a fine art festival, on a small scale. Art patrons can browse through 40 white canopied tents and visit with artists from virtually every medium in painting, sculpture, photography, jewelry ceramics and fiber.
January 7, the market returned for its 13th year, an anniversary celebration is planned for the March 4th show.
Located in the Historic Houston Heights shopping district by YogaOne Studios, 540 W. 19th St. at Lawrence St., the market has been showcasing local and regional artists for thirteen years. The entire family is welcome, live music and delicious fare from some of the area’s best gourmet food trucks is always on site.
“There is definitely a vibe in the air at each market.” Says Mitch Cohen, market founder and manager. “The excitement of new creations, fresh tasty food, wine and beer and my favorite is a band playing their originals, keeping everyone hopping.”
First Saturday Arts Market has established itself as a must-see event and an excellent source for purchasing art directly from the artist for art collectors, first-time art buyers, gift buying and just browsing in this eclectic marketplace. Many of the artists maintain studios at some the area’s popular art studio locations and are also featured at the bigger, nationally recognized art festivals such as Bayou City Art Festival.
“Buying art shouldn’t be an intimidating experience and it isn’t at First Saturday Arts Market.” Cohen said. “The atmosphere is relaxed, and most of the art prices are reasonable for a one day show.”
Like the artists, Cohen books musicians that perform only their original works. From one musician to full bands, all are local and listed on the website.
Keeping with the local theme in this historic close-knit neighborhood, local authors, nonprofits, a winery and brewery are on site to offer their products.
The artists, musicians and other vendors are all listed on the website the week of the event, including food trucks. Free admission and nearby parking make this an easily accessible arts event. Shops and restaurants within walking distance could easily turn a visit into an all day excursion.
First Saturday Arts Market is located at 540 W. 19th Street, Houston, TX 77008, next door to YogaOne Studios. 1stSatArtMarket.com
Founded in 2004 by Heights artist Mitch Cohen, the market has hosted established and emerging artists from all over Texas in it’s 13 years. The artists curate new applicants for this very popular and sought after market. Cohen, also an artist, has become a catalyst to many artists careers. He himself just accepted a role as a board member to the Art Colony Association Inc. The organization behind the Bayou City Art Festival, ranked in the to 10 art festivals in the nation. The Heights, once considered to have the highest concentration of professional artists in the state living there, continues to be a central role in Houston’s vast arts communities thanks to First Saturday Arts Market and the participating artists.
