Having grown up in a rural town of northern Wyoming, my connection to the earth and the landscape was inherent. The mountains, rivers, stones, trees, and flowers were a part of every day life; but I never lost my wonder for them. If anything, with age came a greater respect and sense of awe at the beauty of nature. It began to take on metaphorical meaning for me.
In flowers I see the blossoming of life, optimism, and fulfillment of potential. In rivers I see progression, steady movement toward a goal complete with both turbulent and calm moments. In rock formations I see beauty, elegance, and strength carved over generations by icy winters and dry summers. Nature inspires my art.
I work with a natural flow, much like rain water eroding a path through the dry dirt of the desert. And often people inspire my work. Their personality, what they experience, how they inspire me is manifest in abstract forms reminiscent of natural entities. A flame-like form with the base of a tree resembles my father who is both constant and strong, but reaches for the heavens, burning with enthusiasm for the dreams of his children. In all my work I use line, shape, and space to create forms of movement, resembling the necessary harmonious balance we humans must constantly seek to achieve with the earth. Movement is part of nature; movement is part of us. Movement toward a healthy future is possible.

Saturday, April 2, 2022 – First Saturday Arts Market, Houston’s original monthly outdoor art market, celebrated its 18th anniversary last month. The market has featured dozens of visual artists monthly, showcasing their work in the Historic Houston Heights since March 2004. Since its earliest days the market has maintained a focus on the visual arts, garnering a following of Houston art enthusiasts.
The market is located at 540 W. 19th St. and open 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. September through May. Visitors to this free outdoor event, will find friendly artists with paintings, sculpture, photography, jewelry and many more popular art mediums. Laura Caffrey finds beauty in the intentionally discarded and the inadvertently abandoned, the crumpled and cracked, and the back sides of things. She is drawn to the varying effects time and the environment have on different materials. With her carefully crafted intimate assemblages, Caffrey calls attention to the curious bits and pieces people may not have had the opportunity or taken the time to notice. With Caffrey’s lifelong fascination with art, architecture, history, sustainability, travel and curation, she has been producing art while learning and working in these fields. Her avid curiosity provides her access to people and places which others may not have, and in most cases, yields the very materials with which she works. She finds amazing things on the ground wherever she goes. Caffrey has collectors nation-wide, shown her work in Austin galleries, participated in the City of Austin’s People Gallery, and in 2018 had a well-received show of 46 pieces at Austin’s Dougherty Arts Center. Caffrey owns and operates Fine Art Services, a 31-year-old custom picture framing shop, in Austin, Texas, where she frames her own work and that of many other local artists, and for interior designers and collectors. Her email is monkeyislandqueen@gmail.com, and images of her work are available at www.facebook.com/caffreyart/ and www.instagram.com/lauracaffreyart/ but she insists the pieces are best viewed in person, given their subtly compelling three-dimensional nature.
I am a Contemporary Houston Artist. As far back as I can remember, all I ever wanted to do was create. When I was little I just wanted to make beautiful things to make people smile. As I got older and experienced more in life, I found I had a lot I actually wanted to say, but had a hard time putting it into words… but Where Words Fail, Art Speaks. followyourartbyreka.com

My Art is Bright, and Exciting, and sometimes Intense, and I am constantly trying new styles and techniques. Constantly trying to learn new things and continue growing.
For me, it’s about pouring your heart into something, creating something, and over hours and days, sometimes weeks, it all comes together, and then someone sees it and it stops them. For whatever reason they feel connected to it, it just fits them like a piece they were missing, and that’s it, in that moment your heart and their heart just completely connected. And that’s an amazing thing.
My art is just a collection of all of my thoughts, my dreams, my feelings, and my stories I could never figure out how to say, so I put them on a canvas and draw a line around them.
