First Saturday Arts Market Celebrates 20th Anniversary Year

First Saturday Arts Market celebrates 20 years in business in 2024, marking a significant milestone as Houston’s longest-running outdoor monthly art market. Located at 540 W. 19th St. in the Houston Heights, the market has become a staple in the community, offering a relaxed and festive atmosphere for art enthusiasts and the public alike.

Since its establishment in 2004, First Saturday Arts Market has provided a platform for artists to showcase their work on a monthly basis, pioneering the concept of regular outdoor art events in Houston. The market, which initially began with a gathering of hundreds of visitors and two dozen artisans, has evolved into a vibrant hub for visual artists, attracting attendees from across the city.

Founder Mitch Cohen reflects on the market’s journey over the past two decades, stating, “Looking back over 20 years is quite humbling. The artists, many now good friends, remind me of what I’ve done by providing this opportunity. Their belief in my vision kept it alive, and I credit them, along with friends, neighbors, and visitors, for creating and supporting this wonderful monthly event.”

First Saturday Arts Market visitor can explore a diverse range of art mediums, including pottery, photography, jewelry design, woodcraft, printmaking and painting. Artists undergo a rigorous selection process based on originality, quality, and appropriateness, ensuring that only the highest caliber of work is showcased at the market.
