As far as I can remember I always had a lot of fun creating art. Making drawings of crazy characters has always been my way of generating smiles around me. In the year 2003 I began to paint. My basic idea was to transport the characters that I drew on paper to canvas. Starting from scratch, I experimented with oil paints for two years, painting wildly away without a lot of direction. Good times. Then I met this wise man named Jan Buytaert, who taught me how to use acrylic paint. This was the most important change in my painting style. Acrylics were the tools I needed to shape my own little world and bring my little weird characters to life. My main aim while painting is to have fun and enjoy the moment. I want to capture this good vibe in my paintings and transfer it to the public. This usually results in joyful works full of color and positive energy. With my paintings I like to invite viewers to look at the world through the eyes of a child and to revisit a childhood past of curiosity and enthusiastic discovery.

Gathering inspiration from explorations of daily life, the environment, history and travel – this is the basis for all that I create. My personal influences are diverse, ranging from early childhood exposure to Faroese folk art and Peranakan textiles & ceramics to modern artists such as Jun Kaneko and Dale Chihuly . Mediums of choice vary based on concept and practical use – ceramics, paint, textiles, upcycling, salvaged materials, collage & assemblage . Pure, simple and beautiful is my endeavor – Hansdottir is the resulting amalgamation.
With over 15 years experience in visual arts, I mostly enjoy working with acrylics, graphite and ink. My work has been described as “eccentrically high in detail” and that sums it up pretty good! My ideas are all creations from my own silly little brain, and I live for the smile on people’s faces when they see my work… that’s what it’s all about for me and why I create. My motto is simple: have fun with everything and always question the possibility!

Much of my work today focuses on exploring ways to express the different “seasons” in the circle of life through the use of texture and color. Thus, the symbolism I find in candles, dragonflies, ravens, rust, etc. Art is a wonderful healer. After my youngest daughter died, it was a challenge to work through my feelings of love, loss, grief and anger in a constructive way – to pour it all out on canvas instead of bottling it up inside. While I still think of her every day, life goes on as we continue to place one foot in front of the other. Art is a journey and the road I travel will always be reflected in my work.
For many years I painted in oils, pastels and gouache. I still paint in oil, but am currently enamored with acrylics. The versatility of acrylics inspires me to explore its many techniques and avenues of expression. I’m always thinking about my next project.
