I work in egg tempera, acrylic and pastel. My first art event in Houston was at Yale Street Arts Market in June 2005. I was at the first First Saturday in March 2006 and the first White Linen Night in August 2006.
Martin will be painting live near the Market booth!
Egg tempera was the primary painting medium for nearly every painter in the European Medieval and Early Renaissance period up to 1500. For example, every surviving panel painting by Michelangelo is egg tempera. Egg tempera, is a permanent, fast-drying painting medium consisting of colored pigments mixed with a water-soluble binder medium, usually glutinous material such as egg yolk. Tempera paintings are very long-lasting, and egg tempera was a primary method of painting until after 1500 when it was superseded by the invention of oil painting. I use egg tempera because it is water soluble like acrylic, it is very fast drying and — in my opinion — it has the lustre of oil without the mess.
I am an abstract artist using fluid brush strokes, sprays or pours to create one of a kind works of art on canvas. I don’t paint for critics or the masses but for myself. I create because I feel—it’s as simple as that. I share because it connects with my audience. Everyone is going through something. So, each painting resonates in its own way. Painting expresses what words can’t say. Pain, joy, and everything in between flow through the hues that transform my canvases. When you match that with natural light or innovative lighting fixtures, you bring your home or office to life with both color and emotion.
Art is a moment, a fleeting feeling. It’s like capturing lightning in a bottle. The moment the inspiration is gone, you can’t force it back or express it artistically.
I create abstract paintings and mixed media work. My abstract style is emergent: I let the painting take me where it wants to go. Much of my mixed media work are collages using acrylic mediums and interesting papers. The collages range from a mosaic-like style with faces and/or symbols to abstract to landscapes. A current emphasis in my mosaic work is stylized faces to celebrate racial diversity.
I create paintings varying from landscapes of local vistas and my travels as well as abstract work. I like to explore the intersection of chaos and order in the world, and a common characteristic through all my artwork is a use of vibrant colors and light.
From the very first time I melted glass, I fell in love with the exquisite colors and exciting chemistry that make it so fun to work with glass. I create unique lampwork glass beads – no two of them are ever exactly the same – and incorporate those beads into my own jewelry designs. My style is rustic and organic and a little bit Boho. My art is primarily oil on canvas, occasionally including collage with Japanese rice paper for texture and added interest. My impasto brushwork and often energetic hues are balanced by a minimalist composition and limited palette.
As a studio artist, I have the freedom to adjust colors and composition of ordinary landscapes with unusual colors and styles.
I like to travel the Streets of Houston, The Backroads & Main Streets of Texas, and the roads, highways, and scenic byways beyond to find inspiration for my paintings.
“I create art glass décor using stained glass lead came, German leaded crystal and recycled American glass. I incorporate various elements, such as seashells, mirrors, color, & sacred geometry to achieve uniquely quirky and creative pieces.”
