Robin Whalan is an emerging visual artist, currently working in ink and printmaking. Self-taught, she found her voice through the power of art during the 2020 pandemic. Robin’s work is an expression of her own personal life experiences. A native Houstonian and historical building enthusiast with a background in interior design, she enjoys implementing local architecture, specializing in Art Deco. Her work is an emotional rollercoaster of heartbreak, love, disaster and humor; “relatable” and “honest” being the most commonly used words by viewers when describing her pieces.
I’m a storyteller with my jewelry. It can be a story of a painting which I saw, bird in a nature or at the sea, flowers in the garden, etc. Anything which I saw and fell in love with. I use different techniques in my work but my specialty is filigree.
“I love working with wood. Driftwood and weathered wood have so much character, and when the interior is exposed, unexpected things happen. I often don’t have any idea what the finished piece will look like until it’s done. And for me, that’s why I do it.”
My photography of the natural world ranges from the realistic to the abstract, from monotone to soft saturations to luminous color. I often explore the boundary between photography and painting. My approach is not uniform; I begin with what each scene offers and create what works best for that image. Some images simply rely on the power of their existing form, light, and shadow. As the image allows, I layer in interpretations evoking pointillism, watercolor, abstractions hidden in natural details, or other artistic references.
Flow art changed my life. Pouring gives me the ability to create unique and different artwork, that works for me. I love the versatility and the many ways to enjoy, my mind explodes with colors and freedom of expression allowed with this medium. It is non-objective expressionism! Hope to bring joy! Even though I’m from Houston I received my BFA from Kansas City Art Institute. I was influenced by a professor that said art started and ended with Cezanne. My style is based on the plein air approach of painting from direct observation much like Cezanne approached his subject matter. I go out every week and paint the city I live in, It is my honest response to what I call the Beautiful Ugly that is Houston a place built in a swampy mosquito-infested marshland designed based more on greed happen chance than esthetics. Yes, It’s paper! My collage process begins when I paint and texture paper of all kinds to create my “palette.” At any given time I have over 1,000 sheets of painted paper in every hue. Papers will include sheet music, sandwich wrappers, dictionary pages, etc. The paper is torn by hand and placed individually. Take a closer look.
