As far as I can remember I always had a lot of fun creating art. Making drawings of crazy characters has always been my way of generating smiles around me. In the year 2003 I began to paint. My basic idea was to transport the characters that I drew on paper to canvas. Starting from scratch, I experimented with oil paints for two years, painting wildly away without a lot of direction. Good times. Then I met this wise man named Jan Buytaert, who taught me how to use acrylic paint. This was the most important change in my painting style. Acrylics were the tools I needed to shape my own little world and bring my little weird characters to life. My main aim while painting is to have fun and enjoy the moment. I want to capture this good vibe in my paintings and transfer it to the public. This usually results in joyful works full of color and positive energy. With my paintings I like to invite viewers to look at the world through the eyes of a child and to revisit a childhood past of curiosity and enthusiastic discovery.
Gathering inspiration from explorations of daily life, the environment, history and travel – this is the basis for all that I create. My personal influences are diverse, ranging from early childhood exposure to Faroese folk art and Peranakan textiles & ceramics to modern artists such as Jun Kaneko and Dale Chihuly . Mediums of choice vary based on concept and practical use – ceramics, paint, textiles, upcycling, salvaged materials, collage & assemblage . Pure, simple and beautiful is my endeavor – Hansdottir is the resulting amalgamation.
Varied styles ranging from military/aviation, surreal/sci-fi, realism and abstract paintings. Detail-oriented works composed of oil and acrylic on canvas. (Bio below)
Market manager Mitch Cohen interviewed Jack for his arts column in The Leader Newspaper. Read it here!
From the thriving city of Houston, Texas, Jack Connelly is an artist whose passion is capturing history, action, wonder and imagination on canvas. Jack has been creating art since the moment he could lift a pencil, and has been an active participant in the professional art world for about 35 years.
In Jack’s opinion, painting is one of the most unrestricted and freeing forms of expression. Most of his pieces are created in acrylic and/or oil paint, although Jack has extensive experience with watercolor, graphite, and mixed media as well.
In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Jack took on a nomadic lifestyle as a full-time art show vendor, displaying his art in an average of three to four shows a week in the South Texas area. Jack has also taught several art classes in the past (and wishes to teach more in the future), and enjoys sharing his knowledge, experience, and guidance with others in order for them to learn and practice painting, as well as develop their art skills and techniques.
Jack Connelly’s styles include (but not limited to) military & aviation, sci-fi, surrealism, realism, impressionism, and abstract art.
Commission paintings are regularly requested and are a major part of Jack’s art career. Many of Jack’s commissions have been for veterans or their families, in hopes of passing down their legacy and honor those who have served their country. He loves to take memories, events, dreams, ideas, etc. and bring them to life on canvas. This gives him the ability to share his passion with others while providing for them a unique keepsake; their personal story told in paint and filled with detail, never to be forgotten.
My medium is a varied mix of tiny shells, scraps of paper, slivers of glass, thick gel mediums, crusted gouache additives, creamy acrylic and globs of oil paints, traces of watercolor and melted wax crayons combined with hardened enamels and carefully chosen 14kt gold flake.
Every piece is original and every creation is an unpredictable surprise! I create with a clear heart, no expectations. The materials combined together create a resist-like reaction and the results are different every time…..each piece is genuinely unique and original!

Currently I am generating abstract, expressionist paintings using primarily acrylics as my tool of experimentation. Toss a Pop Art influence into the mix to round out what impacts my style. Mixed media is an increasing influence with many works incorporating plaster, copper wire, organic elements – sand, salt, rock, glass as well as print media. A few even include a favourite old shirt to worn to wear again. My art is diverse in subject and is extremely colorful and textural. It should provoke more than one sense in you. 832-248-8486 eugenejohnhughes.com
My artwork derives from an overwhelming need to visually translate what I have seen or read, experienced or witnessed over a complex lifetime to date. Emotion. Religion. Family. Friends. Past, present, estranged or already gone. Today I see with a clean internal eye. A soul. I see purple in nearly everything. I understand. For the first time, all is finally out of myself and into a tangible visual, hold it in my hand form. Using color and texture, paint and canvas, and other elements, I can clearly execute and therefore share my experience. This is integral to my work. The introvert turned inside out. Revelation. This is the journey I was meant to take and it has just begun. My artwork allows you to participate with me along the way.
